The Young Couple by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, Country Lovers by Nadine Gordimer and Veronica by Adewale Maja-PearceThe writers in the following short stories from diverse culturespresent relationship problems encountered by characters due to kindand cultural pressures. The social pressures be civil war, poverty,apartheid, and education. The cultural pressures are due to differentcultures with different values and beliefs, social standings insociety and societys prejudices and discrimination. The authors ofThe Young Couple, Country Lovers and Veronica demonstrate either ofthese issues using a variety of different techniques to highlight therelationship problems. They want to capture the readers mind andsympathy and provoke thinking. The reader is invited to name his/heropinion about the issues discussed. The main themes of the stories, asintended by the authors, portray the difference in gender roles,social standing and the influence and pressure of the family.In Country Lovers, by Na dine Gordimer, societal pressures cause theproblems between the main characters and their relationship. Thebediand Paulus cannot be together openly because of the apartheid system.Segregation of society meant that the whites ruled the colouredpeople. Paulus Eysendyk is a countenance farmers son and white. He isrick and is esteemed by others. He is educated. He was abaasie-little master. Both he and Thebedi, a black have a childhoodrelationship that blooms into a more adult one, albeit, a clandestineone each returned home with the dark she to her mothers hut, he tothe farmhouse because of the differences in their race and socialstatus. The relationship results in a baby. However, Th... ..., you hear?Throughout this essay, I have showed how the writers of the 3 storiesshow the relationship problems encountered by the characters, theycreated, due to social and cultural pressures. The differenttraditions and religions of the characters also add to the tangledwebs of their lives. The writers had presented their stories withclarity as they used a variety of different techniques to highlightthe problems the characters faced. They have expressed their points advantageously with the use of incisive language, effective structure, precisetone, and appropriate mood. The writer of Veronica, AdewaleMaja-Pearce was most effective in his objective because he wascompassionate in his work. The communicative is very matter of fact, andthe shortness of the story and the language ties in with thefatalistic view and mind set of the main character, Veronica.
